Costume Design First Lesson

15/09/14
Costume Design
Why do we have costume?
To make a performance more naturalistic and to give the actors more character. The costume of a character can also be considered as a prop of the performance as it's something the character can interact with. Costumes are representable of the characters, for example depending on what a someone is wearing will affect the initial first impressions of them, an example of this is if a character appears on stage wearing something black and most of their skin is covered the audience would get the impression this character is mysterious and serious.
Costume also helps actors become more able to improvise things easily, more naturalistic and helps make the performing more believable/relatable.

To conclude the first lesson helped to understand the challenges I would have to face in this unit but also how much freedom I would have to explore and design characters costumes, parts of this lesson were very confusing as to the tasks I would be undertaking in the new few months but I'm sure I'll figure them out when the time comes.
